During combat, many of the same moves vital to the player in other situations can be put to use to overpower enemies. The cultural setting of the game provides many linguistically interesting inscriptions to be found on walls. Throughout much of the game, the player must attempt to traverse the palace by running across walls, ascending or descending chasms by jumping back and forth between walls, avoiding traps, making other types of well-timed leaps, solving puzzles, and using discovered objects to progress. Both elements make use of the Prince’s acrobatic capability and agility. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time combines exploration and combat to create a unique synthesis. Only through the Dagger of Time can the awesome might of the Sands be harnessed. The Sands of Time are a terrible, primordial substance that changes and corrupts every living thing it touches. A key mechanic in the game is using the Dagger to rewind time if the Prince makes a mistake platforming, and using it to kill and freeze enemies.
The gameplay revolves around the Prince’s platforming abilities, broken up by fights with the creatures created by the Sands. Together with Farah, a young Princess who knows the power of the Sands, the Prince works to correct his mistake and foil the Vizier’s evil plans. Visiting the palace of the Sultan of Azad to present the Sands as a gift, the Vizier tricks the Prince into releasing the Sands, transforming the people of Azad into savage monsters under his control.
